Backwoods Cooking Competition

The District Backwoods Cooking Competition went great for me, Nye, and my teammates Theo, Mia, and Zac.

We came first with our clever ideas and innovative designs. We have now been selected to go to the County Backwoods Cooking Competition at Tawd Vale Adventure Centre to compete against the other winners in other areas of Merseyside.

We had various items available in the pantry however we were given some main ingredients: chicken, a potato, cheese, a banana, an apple, an orange and firewood and sawdust to get our fire going. We were provided with tinfoil and were only allowed one pan to cook with.

We had to demonstrate our ability with an axe and a saw (I was the one who was put forward to do so). We had to cut a log in half with the axe using a v shape to dig deep into the log and had to saw a chunk of wood off. Overall, we did quite well in the axe and saw section, however our strong point was our methods of cooking. Out of all the teams we were the most diverse in our cooking methods: we shallow fried, baked, stewed, and fried.

At the start of the event, we were feeling sceptical about the chances of us winning the trophy and funnily our feeling got worse and worse as we went on. We spilled things set things on fire and added way too much spices to things. It wasn’t looking good for us in the first hour however we pulled together and produced a nice looking and tasting meal for the judges.

Our final meal consisted of: breaded fried chicken (this was breaded with ground up cornflakes), seasoned chips (shallow fried), stewed veg and rice. For dessert there was a chocolate pizza and a traditional chocolate banana. We did very well to get to the County event and hopefully we can win that one too.

A HUGE thank you to the District Support Volunteers Paul and Karen for organising and all the volunteers who made it happen.
