BEAVAN CHALLENGE 2022
THE BEAVAN IS BACK WITH A BANG
October 2022 saw the of the return of the Geoffrey Beavan Challenge after a three year break.
THE BEAVAN CHALLENGE
A weekend of team challenges designed to encourage and develop independence, leadership, teamwork, problem solving, physical effort, endurance, and personal improvement is held at the Tawd Vale Adventure Centre near Parbold in West Lancashire every October.
Scouts from across the Merseyside Region compete as a team of four in one of three categories, Juniors Scouts, Senior Scouts, or Explorers/Young Leaders in a challenge camp event organised and delivered by West Wirral District Scouts.
Juniors 10 to 12.5 years
Seniors 12 to 14.5 years
Explorers 14 to 18 years
The 4th Heswall leadership team entered five teams, two junior, two senior and one Explorer team of four young leaders for the 2022 Beavan Challenge. In total 23 Young People camped the weekend with 4th Heswall, 20 taking part and three young leaders supporting our camp and water challenge teams.
As a West Wirral District Sea Scout group our leadership team was tasked with designing and delivering the all new Paddle Challenge. We delivered an exciting and successful new challenge with the assistance of our Young Leader water team and Birkenhead Explorer Sea Scout Leaders.
The Competition
The young people competed in:
Hiking
Archery
Air Rifle Shooting
First Aid Knowledge
Trail Running (Muddy Funster)
Camp Challenge
Canoeing
Paddle boarding
Kayaking
All our teams had a fantastic weekend and the event was thoroughly enjoyed by all including our Camp leaders Chris, Becky, Glyn & Chris.
Success at Beavan 22
4th Heswall has a rich history of winning the Beavan Challenge over the years, the group last won in 1997 although they did not compete in recent years until their return in 2018. In 2019 our junior and senior teams placed third, and now after a three year break our Junior and Young Leader teams won the Beavan Challenge 2022.
A massive congratulations to our junior team led by Jasper. Superb teamwork and commitment from Oliver, Marcus, Jasper and Buddy (who only became a Sea Scout three weeks earlier). Well done boys, a very promising start to your life as an RN Sea Scout with 4th Heswall.
A well deserved win for our Young Leader team who won on their third attempt (previously competing as juniors 2018 and seniors 2019). Congratulations to Dan, Tim, Matt and Susie, a solid and determined team of young adults.
Thank You
A big thank you to event Chairman Phill Richardson (left) West Wirral District Commissioner Andy Longstaff (right) and Sue Flush, Event Secretary (background right) for their tireless hard work getting the Brilliant Beavan Challenge up and running again.

BRAVO to all teams, you all excelled and completed a fantastic weekend of team building and peer bonding.
A MASSIVE THANK YOU to our camp leader team for delivering a well organised and complete camping experience for our Young People, and to our water challenge team who developed the brilliant revised paddle challenge for all the participants on the Delph.
