Humanitarian Aid For Ukraine
Heswall Helps Humanitarian Aid Effort
With the increasing humanitarian crisis developing in Ukraine as over a million refugees flee westward to neighbouring European countries, one of our Scout Parents took action.
Zac’s mum contacted the Polish Centre in Liverpool to ask what was needed, on Wednesday morning a message of help was sent out over local social media and the response was amazing.
The first afternoon saw St Peter’s Centre overrun with donations of much needed supplies. Winter coats, sleeping bags, blankets, first aid kits and personal hygiene items. That evening our fantastic scouts and young leaders sorted and repacked all the donations made by the people of Heswall and West Wirral, ready for shipment to Poland the following day.
On the second day the response was overwhelming, not only in donations but people willing to help. Over 30 people assisted with sorting through, consolidating, labelling and securing the donations ready for shipment. Everyone then helped with rapid loading the 5 vans, 2 pickups, two Scout trailers, and a massive horse transport wagon, all driven by volunteers and taken to the export centre in Liverpool.
By 4 o’clock on Thursday afternoon St Peter’s Centre was empty and clear of any evidence it had ever happened.
A huge thanks to all involved and for the generosity of the people of Heswall.
