STEM Evening with IMechE

Members of 4th Heswall Sea Scout Group were treated to a Science, Technology, Engineering, & Maths evening, STEM, organised by the Regional Committee of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, IMechE, and became stars in their promotional video.

Mo Barker, Chairperson of the IMechE Merseyside and North Wales Regional Committee and Group Scout Leader of 4th Heswall arranged the filming opportunity at one of the many STEM evenings organised over the last few months for members of the Beavers, Cubs and Scouts. All sections have been using the STEM toolkits, provided by the IMechE, in recent STEM sessions as well as a 3D printer, which was demonstrated by Young Leader, Alfie Barker.

The Scouts used primarily lollipop sticks to construct an elastic band powered Lunar Rover assisted by Scout Leader and Engineer Glyn Shakeshaft, with the Cubs employing straws, dowels and cotton reels to make exciting Ball Runs with leader Kevin Egerton. The Beavers were treated to inspecting the intricate snake and Octopus with moving legs which were made on the 3D printer whilst watching the toy robot materialise from the reel of plastic.

All young people and leaders thoroughly enjoyed the experience and explained to the IMechE cameraman, Rhodri, how much they enjoy all the activities using the resources from the STEM toolkits.

Further STEM evenings are planned for the forthcoming terms.
